You Don't Know Jack: Game Over Edition's release has been delayed until October 1st, to allow for further beta-testing, fine-tuning, and so my musician could finish the rest of the music.

My last news entry here was back in 2007 when I was trying to make a Flash movie for the 50th entry of one of my webcomics. As you can probably tell, it didn't happen. For some reason, Flash felt like throwing a fit whenever I tried to make the dang thing and kept closing itself down whenever I tried to open the FLA file.

However! I'm making a new news post here in spite of... incidents I'd rather not elaborate on to announce I'm working on a new Flash project, one that I am pretty sure no one has ever tried before, at least not as far as a Google search yields. I'll be doing this project over the summer and unlike my sporadic attempts at a Phoenix Wrong which have been delayed by, what, a year and a half now, I intend to complete this one before I head back to college for fall semester.

So what is this project, exactly? Well, I think I'll let my teaser trailer say that for me.

On Smack Jeeves, I have a sprite comic called SCemails, a parody of Homestar Runner's Strong Bad Emails answered by my online character SC. Most of the continuality for this comic might not be understandable for those that don't read the author comics I particpate in at SJ, but that's not important. What's important is that the 50th SCemail is going to be done in Flash. Which means that I should actually submit something to the Portal either by the end of this month or by the beginning of January. It's my first attempt to do voice acting, and in my opinion, I think some of you might perfer to have Speakonia speak for me. Anyways, this is just a heads up, for those of you who actually watch my userpage. Somehow.

My WarioWare flash game (working title: WarioWare Demo) is coming along fairly nicely. I've managed to create five fully working microgames, but I have a little trouble with the sixth game that I'm hoping someone can help me with.

Microgame description: The scene is the middle of a desert with a small city in the background. An atomic bomb drops, lands on the ground, shakes, and explodes. The player must get the mouse out of the frame before the bomb explodes to win.

The problem: I don't know how to tell the game how to check to see if the mouse is in the frame. I've tried several of the Newgrounds tutorials to no avail and attempting to get the code from games that have such tasks such as the Impossible Quizzes just drives me crazy. So can someone tell me what ActionScript I need to determine whether or not the mouse is in the frame when the bomb explodes?

I can't find a tutorial for this.

The main problem I seem to be having with my WarioWare game is that I have no idea how to make collisions work. I used to make EXE games with Game Maker and it handled all the collision stuff automatically, so I'm lost. I need a tutorial that will show me how to make collisions work in Flash 8 so I can make my game. Also, one of the games is the standard mouse maze and I kinda need a tutorial for that as well. Post any relevent links you can find in the comments to this news post.

If you read all that and think "OMG THOSE ARE THE EASIEST THINGS TO DO IN FLASH GAMES HE'S A TOTAL N00B WITH NO SKILLZ" then I'm glad we haven't met in person because odds are I'd cave your face in. I don't need your comments if you're not going to actually help.

I'm beginning work on a demo project that, when done, should accurately mirror a real WarioWare game. Many others have tried to create something along the veins of WW but I believe they have failed. This project, however, will be tough; it involves a lot of ActionScript, something I do not claim to be an expert on. I'm using tutorials on the site to assist me. If you have any (helpful) advice, you're free to give it to me here.

This demo project will have six microgames, one of which being a boss game. Once the demo is completed, I am considering doing a full stage worth of microgames. I have high hopes for this project. Let's just hope they don't fall on my head and kill me.

I've finished one of my Flash projects and submitted it to the portal: Lockbert! I spent about three weeks on this baby and I hope you all enjoy it.
